On a Jet Plane

The kids and I got back on Friday from our first big vacation.

I called it Mandy and the Gingers, East Coast Tour.

For obvious reasons.

Coming home, I have one overwhelming emotion and that is utter love and admiration for my children. I know. I'm going to sound all gushy and proud mommy-ish, but you're going to just need to bear with me. Mostly because I'm going to write about every minute detail of our eight day adventure.

Even if it takes sixteen posts to do so.

This was their first plane trip unless you count the one to Vegas when Joseph was eight months old. I'm not a frequent traveler. With the kids in tow, I knew I needed to seek professional advice.

So I talked to my girlfriends.

Who are all frequent travelers.

Following their advice, I packed and we left the house, chipper and excited, with Baby Evie in tow knowing that for us, the journey was part of the vacation.

The made it to the airport in enough time to stop by this place called a "mall" where my country mice children exclaimed over the escalators and the food court.

We got to the airport...

Said goodbye to our friend and driver Steve and stood in line for security.

Our experience with the TSA will get it's own post. Needless to say, from that point on whenever we walked through a metal detector, Elizabeth would worry that Mommy's boobies would get us in trouble.

Seriously.

It's another whole post.

We had an hour delay once we got to LAX, but with America Airlines being an official partner of Planes, there were these crazy things called video games in the terminal. They also gave the kids coloring books and crayons which, with a snack, helped us to pass the time.

Then it was time to board.

And for the record? The entire airplane knew it was their first flight. Elizabeth informed everyone from the ticket agent to the flight attendants to our fellow passengers as we stood in line. She informed them with a dimpled smile and a hop.

Because Elizabeth always hops.

I'd hoped they'd fall asleep after take off. Instead, they went through their backpacks and played with every toy, every electronic device. They ate their snacks and their dinners. They happily accepted the special treat of Sprite which promptly landed in E's lap when we hit a bit of turbulence. (Note to self: bring lidded cups next flight)

Most of all, they had fun. For all six hours.

Even when I was starting to get deliriously tired, they remained wide awake.

Until we landed, bumpily, in Boston.

Where their smiles remained intact.

Because these children of mine? They're amazing travelers. I knew from this point on we were going to have a blast.

I was right.
