The Sound of Silence

I spent a couple hours this afternoon cleaning house.  Really cleaning house.  The dust bunnies in the master suite have great grandchildren and I was embarrassed for Elizabeth to see her Mommy and Daddy's bathroom.

I'm going to stop here for a moment.  I've got a bone to pick with men.  Maybe it's just my men, but the toilet bowl is 11" x 13"* and yet...they miss?  Even Joseph, who has some excuse in his inexperience, is only inches from the toilet bowl and yet, he misses.

Really?

*I actually grabbed a tape measure and measured it.

Moving away from the toilet...
As I was dusting away, I luxuriated in the sounds of silence.  No TV.  No radio.  No children.  (They were asleep.)  There was nothing but the sound of the cars passing outside and the scrape of my scrub brush. I rarely listen to music or TV while home alone.  Maybe it's the result of growing up in a house of six, but I love the sound of silence.

I'm one of those odd people that can commute 40 minutes to work without listening to the radio, a book on tape or even having a chat (via hands free device, of course).  Not that I don't do all three, but, on occasion, there's nothing better than being alone with your thoughts, without the buzz of distractions.  I watch people walk or run or even read with their iPods firmly in place and wonder...how do they do that?  Is it just me?  Is this one area where I just can't multi-task?

I don't know, but I do know that as pretty as my room and bathroom look, I'll be spending more "quiet" time in other parts of the house this week.

I love that silence. I think it's why I stay up too late.
