Harbor Festival

Continuing on with our busy weekend...

Saturday morning, it rained. As in water coming down from the heavens. Being in California, I forget what rain is. After all, Saturday's wetness is the first time it's rained since the beginning of April. (Although I'm not sure I can honestly count .04 inches of rain as rain. I may have to term it "sprinkle".) Chad had to go check the fields to see if they were still safe for play. We decided that Joseph could tag along. After bundling him up like a mountain man - complete with triple layers and a hat - he raced around putting together everything he "needed" to go to work with Daddy.

Side note: It's a sign of our location that we bundle Joseph up when the mercury dips below 60.

Joseph has gotten into a very cute, very funny stage where he likes to load himself up before he goes anywhere. To go to work with Daddy for all of ten minutes, he piled a water bottle, a pumpkin (don't ask) and three cars into his little arms. When I tried to get him to leave something behind, he looked at me very seriously, very earnestly and said, "I need this."

Later that morning, we went to the Harbor Festival in Morro Bay.

Side rant: Community festivals that charge admission irritate me to the extent that if my mom hadn't been fired up to go, I would have continued my ten year boycott. I can't understand the purpose of paying $8 per adult to go to a festival that is filled with vendors and little else. Sure, there are a couple of bands, but I can see them for free any Friday during the summer concert series that abound in our county. In my mind, I'm paying $8 to shop.

Anyway...by the time we parked and got unloaded, the sun broke through the clouds and the temperatures warmed up. Joseph enjoyed the music but not as much as he enjoyed the boats and the seals. We grabbed lunch at one of the vendor booths and sat on a bench by the pier, watching seagulls gather, stalking us for food.

The highlight for the boys (and girls too, I'm sure) was the fire fighter booth. Joseph and Benny freely spoke to the paramedics and stood still with barely contained excitement as badges were placed on their shirts.

After lunch, we headed home for Joseph's nap. The cool weather of the morning begged for a rich stew. The warm weather of the afternoon urged a summer BBQ. We ended up giving in to the temptation of grilled veggies and fish. After dinner, we sat outside in the starlight huddled around the fire pit, toasting marshmallows.

Again, I took too many pictures to post individually. Here are a few arranged in a slide show for your viewing pleasure.

Side note: I love the first picture of Joseph almost as much as he loved the boats.
