Where Did I Put the Tape?

Packing has begun and will continue in earnest all weekend.

As I went through my kitchen linens, leaving most behind, I started to get excited. For the first time in my life I'm going to be living on my own.

Yes, I know I wrote those words in fear the other day, but last night I suddenly realized fully what that meant:

I can decorate any way I want.

First, I had roommates who had a say in what went in our common living areas. Then I had a husband. Now? It's the kids and I. And we're pretty brilliant decorators.

Yesterday evening, we went to Target and looked at cafe curtains for the windows over the kitchen door and sink. Looking through them, I automatically began to pick green - Chad's favorite color. I stopped suddenly.

"Hey guys," I said casually, "what do you think of teal?"

"I love it, Mama!" Joseph said.

"Ah lahve it!" Elizabeth parroted.

"Maybe we can do our kitchen in teal?"

"And red! It can be like Mandyland!"

"You are a genius, Joseph."

"I know."

We didn't find what we needed, but it opened a whole new world of home decor. I may even sew my cafe curtains out of fabric from this adorable shop. Or maybe I'll find some cute ones on Etsy. And for sure I'm going to get one of these as my house warming gift to myself.

Bottom line...

I don't have to worry about any other opinion than my own.

Though I may end up with Star Wars somewhere. We'll see.
