Opening the refrigerator, she paused with her hand halfway to the cream. Her plump arm, illuminated and pale, mocked her. Drawing back, she closed the door and sat back down at the kitchen table.
Emily lay in her bassinet nearby, her wide eyes fixed in facination on the ceiling fan.
Todd still hadn't come home. It had been five weeks since their fight. After the first couple of days, she'd swallowed her pride and called him, begging him to answer, to talk to her. Finally, after threatening to keep Emily from him, he'd arrived at the house.
Carrie's hand clenched around the ceramic handle at the memory. He'd walked into the living room, anger etched on his face.
"You're a real piece of work, aren't you? Trying to keep me from seeing my daughter."
Carrie flushed to remember her response, "I'm so sorry, Todd. I didn't know any other way to get you here. We need to talk, to work this out."
"What we need to do, Carrie, is talk about your anger issues," he'd answered in his maddeningly calm voice. "You had no right to slap me."
"But you cheated on me," she had cried.
"There was no reason to resort to physical violence." With that, he'd picked up Emily and walked into the nursery, spending an hour playing with their daughter before leaving.
"I'll be back in a couple days. It might be best if you're not here," he'd said in parting, his cold voice slicing through her. He'd returned while she was at work and Emily was home with the nanny. Kristi reported that he always spent an hour or two with his daughter and then left.
Carrie slumped in the kitchen chair. Sighing, she took a sip of her coffee, wincing at the flavor. Setting the mug on the table, she pushed back the hair that had fallen from the sloppy bun at the nape of her neck. How long had it been since she'd washed it? Why did she even care?
A rapid knock startled her. Scraping the chair back, she stood and walked to the front door. It wasn't much past dawn, too early for visitors.
She opened the door cautiously and stared at the red car disappearing down the drive, music mixing with the dust. A light thud brought her eyes to the porch floor. A thick envelope sat on the smooth wooden boards. Stepping outside, Carrie tightened the belt of her terry cloth robe and reached down to pick up the envelope.
Turning it over, she saw her name scrawled in bold handwriting across the front. She opened it and slid out a packet of papers. Attached to the top by a binder clip, was a note.
"You deserve better and you damn well better believe I do too. I'm sorry."
It was signed with an "H".
Pulling the note free, Carrie's eyes widened at a photograph of Todd, his hand up the skirt of a woman wearing a sorority tank. His mouth was clamped on her neck, a beer in his free hand. She flipped to the next page to see a picture of him with another young girl, laughing into the camera while she had her hands down his pants.
Carrie fell bonelessly into the rocking chair on the front porch and looked at picture after picture. Each one showing her husband with one of the two women. At the bottom of each page was a url address for Facebook.
Anger bloomed in her chest, rising up her neck and into her cheeks. "That son of a bitch," she hissed. Standing quickly, she put the pages back into the envelope and slammed into the house.
"Kristi!" she shouted, taking off her robe as she walked towards the bathroom. Kristi, poked her head sleepily out of her bedroom, eyes widening as Carrie walked down the hallway in her underwear. "I'm going into town. Could you please call Henry and let him know I'm going to be late?"
"Sure," Kristi said, following Carrie, confusion on her face. "What should I tell him?"
Carrie turned on the water for the shower and grabbed a clean towel. "Tell him I've gone to find a lawyer. One that can get me the quickest divorce in Montana." Carrie closed the door and stepped into the steaming water.
Kristi stood outside the bathroom door, a smile creeping across her face. Spinning away she pumped her fist, "Yes! It's about damn time. Go Carrie!" Hurrying, she went to call Henry, her Alpha Phi socks slipping on the hardwood floor.
This was a piece of fiction inspired by The Red Dress Club prompt which showed a photograph of a group of cameras. Karen's been wondering what was in The Envelope that Honey dropped off at the house. I thought I'd let you know.If you'd like to read more of this story, click on Fictional Mandyland. This particular bit comes immediately after Leaving Town.
And, as always, concrit is welcomed.

Todd is more four letter words than I'm allowed to write here!!! But, way to go Carrie! Hell, way to go Honey!! Didn't think I'd ever like that gal, but the way your whittle your characters, it shouldn't surprise me so.
Not only do your stories, as a whole, lure me in and make me want more (demand via Twitter for more!), but I love the simple little bits and pieces of your writing. Love: bitter brew, the ceiling fan that no baby can resist, music mixing with the dust, what Honey wrote on the envelope, fell bonelessly, anger bloomed in her chest, and Kristi's Alpha Pi socks.............and the way you always tease us with just a bit more.
Apologies if I hounded you for an answer to what was in that blankety blank blank envelope, but it was so worth it to find out! THANK YOU!!! :>
To be honest, this was all for you. :) If you hadn't hounded me for the contents of the envelope, I would have let it sit for a while. lol
Oooooooooooooo. The only thing I'm confused about here, is if Kristi is the girl in the sorority t-shirt, wouldn't Carrie have recognized her? If it's just a fine little twist, please ignore me, LOL. Either way, I'll be ready for more when it goes up. Where is Gage? I want more Gage!! LOL.
The answer! Hurrah!
I do have to admit I was reading through it at first wondering how you were going to work it into the prompt but I should've guessed. :)
Good job. I'm hooked. :)
Good story!!
Like Drama Mama I was a bit lost with Kristi & if she was somehow involved with Carrie's husband too. Based on her reaction at the end I wouldn't think so but then again I can't hear the tone she's using either.
Yay Carrie! I'm glad she's being proactive. I like that the visual images are what pushed her into action (and what lovely ammunition if he is a jerk about the divorce!) I'm glad Honey left the envelope; I had a soft spot for her after reading the piece you wrote from her perspective.
I am a LITTLE confused/intruited by Kristi's Alpha Phi sock? It seems like the girls' faces in the photos are visible? I guess maybe not the one where his head is in her neck? Or maybe she does recognize Kristi and just doesn't deal with it at that exact moment.
Again, yay Carrie (and time to wash the hair!)
ooooh, her "Sorority socks"? hmmm.
this was sooo good, I loved how those pictures told the story for you....awesome (as usual :)
Eek! I couldn't read fast enough! Go Carrie go and thank goodness for H, yes?
I loved the description of the coffee in the beginning- it's sticking with me as I finally go refill my own cup. {I couldn't leave mid-read!}
XO
Is it wrong that I'm just all swoony over Henry? Besotted. It's embarrassing.
and the little bit about Kristi's socks?
teehee... you've got some wicked in there, don't you, girl?
YES! Go Carrie! And I am really liking Honey :)
At first I thought it was Henry who was the 'H' in the note. I thought "wow, he' taking quite the step"
I'm assuming it was Honey dropping off the envelope, and the more you write her the more I like her.
This does properly place Todd in the jerk category. The other side effect it has is changing the potential tension between her and Gage, because now she's free to fall for him, should she choose to, without any push and pull of guilt from Todd.
Interestingly, at first I thought that the socks were Carries, as if once she had been that young sorority girl, which she now had aged out of. (I was in a hurry to see what happened.) Then realizing they were Kristis confused me because she seemed actually glad for Carrie taking action, thus I did not perceive her as a threat, though the socks seemed to leave a lingering question.
I loved also how inactive she was in the beginning and then how propelled in the end. I agree that it is nice to see her in action and I wish that she wasn't tied to Todd forever, I wish the baby was someone elses, like anyone elses.
I am completely mesmerized by your writing. I can't get enough of this story.
You seem to nonchalantly drop in the tiniest details (the oily film on her coffee) that make the story so rich, so visual.
You are one talented broad!
Awesome story, especially the twist of the socks at the end. I will probably have bad dreams of Scott cheating on me tonight.
I love how the pictures are the catalyst for the change in Carrie's attitude. Oh, and how much do I want to choke Todd? I'm just hoping he gets his. :-))
Can you tell I'm hooked? Can't wait to read more. Good stuff!
I never said that Kristi was one of the girls in the picture. ;)
Don't worry...Gage will be coming back.
Thanks!!
Eek! If you couldn't hear her tone, then I didn't do a good enough job writing it.
For the record, her tone was triumphant and happy. She truly cares for Carrie.
Never said Kristi was in the pictures. In fact, if she was, you'd better bet that Carrie wouldn't have been so nice to her while getting ready to head to town.
Thank you!
Honey redeems herself in this one. :)
Just a little something wicked. ;)
I didn't even think that people would assume the H was for Henry! lol
Honey dropped off the envelope in the piece called "Leaving Town".
Oh Todd's a jerk. There's a part of me that wants to explore his character a little more. Find his motive, maybe gain him some sympathy, but he's SUCH a jerk.
I LOVE the idea that you had re: Carrie's socks. Wish I would have thought of it first. And as for Kristi...she's happy with Carrie's actions. I think I may need to write a bit more about her, considering the number of confused comments. :)
Thank you so much, friend!
LOL...the twist at the end is going to have to be explained. Too many people are assuming Kristi's in league with Todd. And she's really a pretty awesome chick. Henry wouldn't have hired someone who wasn't.
I'm sorry!! I didn't mean to imply that you didn't write it well at all.
For me I didn't hear the tone because of the socks she was wearing! It made me wonder if she was one of the girls in the picture... maybe Carrie couldn't see the face(s) of the girls and it didn't dawn on her that it was Kristi.
YES! Glad to see Carrie's got her mojo back.
Hmm, good, b/c that didn't seem like the kind of relationship that Carrie & Kristi have. But I also know you're not the type of writer to just have random details like a sorority sock in there without more of a meaning, especially with the detail about the sorority tank top woven in. So what does it mean? Rhetorical, I don't expect you to give away the story :)
No, don't be! I struggled with that paragraph and whether or not to show a bit of my hand. The first time I read it, it sounded as if Kristi WAS one of the girls. So I re-wrote and still wasn't sure if I hit the tone right.
A good reader will let me know if I do or not. :D
There's meaning. lol I hope a future prompt will let me share it. :D
Thank you!!
Well, if she's going to let a hot hunk of a cowboy feel her up, she needs to start getting her mojo back.
It'll be a long road, but I have hopes for that woman yet!
YES!!! So glad she's on the right path now....but I have a feeling something is stewing!!!
Something's always stewing. :D
Yes! Go, Carrie!
To be honest, I didn't even pick up on the bit about the socks til I read some of the comments. And now I'm even more intrigued! Although for the record I totally heard Kristi's tone and felt her genuine enthusiasm - no confusion on that part.
The Socks! The Sorority girl! Oh what a tangled web you are weaving. I love that Carrie is finally angry and not just hurt. It's time she took some action and started being proactive in her life rather than just reactive.
WHOA!!! Always a twist at the end. Can't wait to read more :)
Awww...you rock! :>
Okay...I didn't guess right. I take it I need to follow the bread crumbs even further back. I take it there's something about the sorority?
