A Day Fit for a Mom

I woke up this morning to the sound of slamming doors, giggles and running feet.

It was 6:36 a.m.

I heard the garage door open and then close.

Blissful silence.

I woke again to the sound of rustling paper and Chad telling the kids to close the door.

It was 7:45 a.m.

I dozed back to sleep.

I heard the bedroom door open and then close. Open again and close. Open again and then the loudness of a five-year-old's whisper. "She's still sleeping!!"

It was 8:15 a.m.

I didn't bother to go back to sleep. I lay quietly, with my eyes closed, listening to Chad wrangle the kids. I heard him tell Joseph to sign his name and then heard Elizabeth screaming that she "do it!"

The door opened again.

I shut my eyes tight as the kids ran in the bedroom yelling, "Happy Mother's Day!"

Or, in Elizabeth's case, "Hoppy Maa Deee!"

I opened my eyes wide in surprise. "What's all this?!"

"It's Mother's Day and you're our mother!" Joseph yelled in delight, bouncing on the bed. Elizabeth reached her hands to me to lift her up. "We're going to make you breakfast in bed!"

They gave me flowers. Red because that's my favorite color.

They gave me a balloon because it had mushrooms on it, which sometimes grow in our garden by accident and Elizabeth likes balloons.

Joseph gave me handprints made at school. Big blue splotches that nearly covered the wooden heart.

They gave me cards with their names scrawled in big letters.

They gave me a heart necklace, "One big heart - that's you. And two baby hearts - that's me and Elizabeth. We're inside your heart."

But most of all, my two little loves gave me the greatest gift I could have ever dreamed...

They made me a mother.

My son is very particular about celebrating special days. They have to be epic.

I don't know what I'd do without those sweet babies. I swear, they're the moon and the stars. Well, not literally, but you know what I mean.

Thanks sweetie. Are you sure it's not the preggo hormones making you teary? ;)

Oh so sweet. As jarring as it can be, love that morning tackle on Mother's Day. There's nothing like arms thrown around a Mama's neck with almost choking ferocity, filled with a kidlet's love. Even a few days late, still wishing you a Happy Mama's Day! :>
