It Was a Lego Birthday

Grab your tissues, kids, yesterday we celebrated Joseph's fifth birthday.

Or maybe it's just me who needs tissues.

His actual birthday is on Wednesday, which makes me cling a little harder since he is still, after all, four. Which means he's not quite a big kid yet.

This year's birthday theme was, of course, Lego. Because those little plastic blocks have invaded our home. When I started doing a little research, I realized a Lego birthday could get really complicated, really quick. Kind of like using 95 pieces to build a four inch model car.

So we decided to keep it simple.

I stacked some Duplos and took a picture for the party invite.

I stacked some more Duplos and took more pictures for the birthday banner.

My mother in law made adorable juice box covers.

In my one fit of craziness, I made candy Legos to adorn the store-bought cupcakes. And yes. There's a story there. You'll find out in tomorrow's post entitled, "Why I Should Qualify for Sainthood for Not Killing My Husband".

We threw a pile of Legos (1,000 to be exact) on a tarp outside and let the kids build their own party favor. To be honest, they were more interested in playing with Joseph's (and Elizabeth's) toys and looking at the chickens than building something, but they eventually came around.

When everyone left, the last of the party decor was put away and the fifth Lego set built, I tucked Joseph into bed - freshly showered and smelling delicious.  He hugged me tight and said, "I'm so happy! Thank you for the birthday party. It was the best party ever!"

My heart melted. My eyes watered. My lips covered his face with kisses.

You, Mama, are fantastic! We recently had a lego party as well, but it was hosted by a local kids store. $15 per kid, and they got to take home all the lego they built...all we had to supply was the cake!

You, Mama Mandy, Rock! A Lego party like that sounds fantastic. (Why have we never had one here?! Silly me.) and I love your bday invite & banner!

I'm a little frightened now after seeing your pic of exactly 1,000 Lego bricks......we separated & organized our boy's over the winter and if that is 1,000, then he easily has well over 30,000 (I'm really scared just how high the number actually is!!!)!!! Yikes!

Looking forward to reading why you qualify for Sainthood (especially since we know you love to corrupt a blueberry or two ;>) and how your husband has survived! :>

Joseph and his friends looked like they were having so much fun.

TOTALLY worth it. I'm so glad you guys were able to make it. :)

HAHHAHAHAH! Candy legs....it's not THAT kind of party.

A genius with photo editing software. (Not photoshop. I'd be beyond brilliant with photoshop.) The invites were my favorite bit and took all of ten minutes to photograph and edit and then $5 to get copies made.

Thanks, Mom. :)

Oh, hon. When I saw the size of the box they came in, I nearly had heart failure. Extrapulating it out, we must have at least ten thousand and we're just getting started!

If you have a Lego party, let me know and I'll send you the photos of the letters and stuff.

You creative woman, you!

Five is the toughest birthday yet. Having been through two of them and one to go, I feel your pain.

But at least there was cake.

So glad to have you in my corner for the parties... but seriously, it was such a fun day and Jackson had a blast! He was playing with his legos tonight. I may be doomed after his first exposure to lego fun. ;) Seriously though, Joseph's reaction is totally worth it to do all that work and explaining why you need color coordination at a party. ;) Love ya!

That really does sound like the best party ever!! You were so creative with the lego theme. I love it! The invites were really cute....and you MADE lego candy? I'm thinking you should get some sort of mom award for that one!

Happy birthday to Joseph!

I LOVE this idea! And it's so in keeping with "I'm not doing a ton of work for kids who don't even notice." attitude towards parties.

I was about to ask what you'd do for a 3 year old girl's party but I'm thinking I've got one more year to go before she even knows its a big deal. *crossing fingers!
