The night after we framed our coop, I woke up at two in the morning. I stared at the shadows on the ceiling, trying to figure out what was niggling at the back of my mind and interrupting my sleep.
It came to me in a flash. Our coop didn't have a door.
"Chad! Chad!" I shook him awake.
"Wha?"
"The coop. It's built wrong. There's no door!"
"What?" he murmured - or maybe it was hissed.
"The coop needs to come apart. It doesn't have a door. I think I have a better plan."
"Go. To. Sleep." He rolled over with a huff and a fair bit of melodrama.
The next day, in an attempt to explain my middle-of-the-night light bulb, I shook and pushed the flimsy coop. Chad, reluctant to take apart something that took us two days to build, argued that we'd just add reinforcing. A ''discussion" ensued that resulted in Joseph interrupting us and saying, "If you two don't stop arguing, I'm putting you both down for a rest."
After we got up from our naps, we took apart the coop and began the Coop de Ville - Second Edition.
We used 2x4's and planks of wood salvaged from pallets to build six pieces to assemble in the garden.
I think it's important to note that this is the largest wood working project Chad and I have ever attempted.
It's actually the only wood working project we've ever attempted.
And we're very, very proud of it.
And we're hoping the garden on top grows and it doesn't collapse on the chickens.
Now it just needs chickens! And a sign. We're thinking we need a sign on that blank spot above the door. Any suggestions?

Why not just Coop DeVille Est. 2011? haha It looks great!
How about Coop D'etat?
Oh, nerd jokes, how I love thee.
Coup de grâce is just too morbid, huh?

I've never seen the process of building a chicken coop. This is interesting and I am pleased that you put a door in. I'm not sure how it would have worked without the door. Did I show my total ignorance of chicken coops?
What about Coop de poulet? It's not the most creative, but accurate:~)
You should clearly name it after Henry and Ellie's ranch.
How 'bout the chicken ranch?
lol
I think something like "Future Chicken Salad" on the frint would be appropriate!
How about The Coops and then list the names of the chickens inside little flowers..kinda of hippy I guess.
I wanted to have chickens, but my stupid HOA forbids it. I love that you guys built it yourself!
It's really coming together! I simply cannot wait to see the finished product. Squee!
This is amazing. What hard work and talent. I am very impressed!
Totally seems like my typical M.O. lol Short and too the point.
I'm so happy I found fellow nerds.
Oh Lord.
I actually know someone who named her chickens things like Kung Pao and Nugget.
Wow. That actually sounds very oh la la.
The door thing was probably vital. For many reasons. :)
What was the name of their ranch again?
BWAHAHAHHAAHHA
Future Egg Salad more likely.
Like their last name is "Coop"? Hmmm...
I'm really happy we did it. It was a great family project.
Ummmm...it's basically done. We decided not to paint it for several reasons, most of which are the same: We didn't want to sand, prime and paint.
So it's going to fade to a nice silvery gray. Au natural. lol
But it will have - eventually - a pretty roof of strawberries.
Thank you! We're feeling pretty darn proud. :)
how fun! looks like an adventurous project!
Brave! My hubby's great at wood work but I'm not sure I'd try to help... ;)
Love that you had to have naps!
what a great project! Coop de Ville seems an obvious choice :D
SO cool! At Nino's school they have a chicken coop and Nino really enjoys taking care of the chicken's everyday. It's such a neat thing to be able to experience. Your kids are so lucky to have a mom like you!
