Blackberries are luscious, voluptuous mouthfuls that burst and fill your senses with flavor, leaving behind purple stains like a lover's last lingering embrace.
Strawberries are an innocently seductive first kiss on a summer's day, deep red perfection that tempts, lures and then leaves laughing.
Raspberries are classy elegance, coming to life when drizzled with dark chocolate. They give a hint of sweetness and then disappear like a wisp of silk on a breeze.
But blueberries, ah, blueberries are the "healthy" berry. They're full of antioxidants. They're one of the twelve best foods. They're super berries.
And oh how I love to corrupt them.
I bring them into my house, the blue globes so plump and sweet. I start slowly, putting handfuls in my oatmeal. They burst, turning the gray oats purple, delighting my children and taste buds.
Then, I get a little devious. I mix them with zucchini and batter and bake loaves of bread. I mix them with sour cream and bake them into a pie. I fill the house with the smells and tastes of sweet berries and sugar.
And then the the ultimate corruption.
The room is hot, steamy. Tendrils of hair curl at the nape of my neck as I bring the cool berries out of the fridge. I gently wash them under a slow stream of water. They tumble out of my hand into a bowl. I crush them, opening them, exposing them.
I pour thick, sweet honey out of a jar, coating the berries in sticky sunshine. I add sugar and spicy nutmeg, bringing the concoction to a boil. I squeeze a lemon into the pot, sucking on my finger and tasting the sweetness of the honey and the tang of lemon.
I boil them until the pieces of berry float in a sweet honey bath. Then, I fill jars, lining them on the counter. The light reflects off the facets of glass, highlighting the final corruption of the blueberry.
Once a super berry, now embraced by sugar and honey.
This post was inspired by The Red Dress Club Remembe(red) prompt: write about your favorite fresh fruit or vegetable.
This was difficult for two reasons. 1. I like a lot of fruits and vegetables. As a budding gardener, I'm enthralled by the process of seed to table. 2. It's not my normal style of writing. I decided to play a bit and see what I came up with.
Also, I only used half the words I was allotted. That MUST be a record of some sort.
You can also find me today on Makes Fun where I review the SodaStream. Which is NOT a fresh fruit or veggie. It might actually be the opposite.

I'm going with food porn, too. FANTASTIC post! And seriously? YUM!
Move over Giada, here comes Mandy! "Then, I get a little devious." Then? Oh so glad you did. And I'll never, ever....ever think of that innocent healthy antioxidant little blue fruit that I love to give my kidlets the same way again! :>
Blueberries are delicious and I would agree they are excellent to corrupt. Pancakes, waffles, muffins, breads...all kinds of not so healthy foods that blueberries can be added to.
Wow - I never thought to corrupt a blueberry. Nice writing.
I enjoyed the feeling of this piece. It was carefree and fun with some great description. I love how you described each berry and the corruption of the blueberry. You are always one I look for in the red dress club linkups. I always like to see what you come up with!
I think you need to get a room to yourself with your berries. Very hot and steamy!! I see a romance novel in your future. : ) TRDC
I love how many ways you transform that blueberry. There are so many things to do with them. The blueberry honey is brilliant!
Your descriptions have me craving fresh blueberries, and thusly July.
But here is where I'm truly intrigued: blueberry-zucchini bread? Yum! and the blueberries in honey thing... talk to me, Goose!
I love all the different things you do with blueberries. I would've never thought to put them in bread w/ zucchini. I'm not a huge blueberry fan, but my kids are. The only way I will eat them is frozen. I know, strange. Good job on the post. I agree - I had a tough time with this one as well but always fun to try something new.
Great. Now I'm hungry!!!! That honey-berry concoction sounds like heaven!
I feel like I need a cold shower.
This was sexy and delicious. You go!
Yum! Now I want some sexy blueberries. :)
It may not be your normal style of writing but you did a wonderful job!!
And now I think you need to share all those recipes with us!!
Skimming the comments, I'm glad I'm not the only one who got a little hot and bothered by this post. *fans self*
Omg. This was delicious!
I need to make that bread!
I need to get me some of that spread!
Mmmmmmmmmmm
First....I absolutely love this. It is brilliant.
Second....I want to come to your house to eat fruit!!! My mouth is seriously watering now, and I may or may not have just drooled on my keyboard while reading this.
This is perfectly delicious, your descriptive tale is amazing. Truly perfect. My favorite is the way you talk of "corrupting" a blueberry. Amazing visuals you have brought, so well done.
I'm not too proud to admit I am easily amused, and hence in love with your use of the word corrupting in this post!
You have confirmed my love for blueberries and that spread sounded better than sex!...:)JP
Corrupting blueberrys may be the best post this week! Very fun to read!
Honestly, you've got a little "9 1/2 Weeks" going on here. Off to take a cold shower. Right after I grab a handful of blueberries.
Oh my.
Blueberries are awesome, especially when you corrupt them. ;)
They're so goody-two-shoes, I HAVE to corrupt them. lol
You know...I've never seen that movie. Maybe I should. ;)
LOL...So glad you enjoyed it!!
Depends on...never mind. I'm keeping this blog PG-13. ;)
When it comes to fruit, corruption is a very serious business. From one easily amused person to another, I'm glad you were amused.
Thank you, friend. I'm glad you enjoyed it!!
It's hard to tell whether or not being on month three of weight watchers has made me more or less obsessed with food.
After this post...
I'm going with more.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
You are such a poet!!
That bread? DIVINE. As in, it lasted less than two hours. And I wasn't the only one eating it.
Now you understand why my husband asked, "WHAT are you writing about? Blueberries? Really?"
Click on the links, lady. I have the recipe for the sour cream blueberry pie and the blueberry zucchini bread. I'll post the recipe for the blueberry honey jam soon.
OH! And when I say "lady" I mean it in a very friendly "girlfriend" manner. Sometimes I forget you can't hear what in my head. :)
Blueberries are just too sexy for their bowl. Too sexy for their bowl. Gotta leave their bowl.
Wait. Did I just sing Right Said Fred?
Aging myself. Oh and making a bigger dork of myself than usual.
Awesome! I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
It is totally divine. It's actually a jam and on fresh bread transport you to a place beyond delicious.
I'm not a huge fan of blueberries. Or, at least, I wasn't until I found all these recipes. Totally a fan now.
Okay, Maverick. Click on the links for the blueberry zucchini bread - you'll never go to "plain" zucchini bread again. As for the blueberry honey...it's a jam and it is divine and I'll post a recipe next week.
They really are so versatile. They can be added to just about anything. I know someone who has used them as an addition to savory dishes!
My kitchen was hot and steamy while I was making the jam. TOTALLY put me in the mood. For blueberries. :)
Thank you so much!!!
It was such a fun prompt. I knew instantly the direction I wanted to take it. The honey did the rest.
They BEG for corruption. They're so..."good".
We love blueberry pancakes and waffles. They end up so yummy we don't even need syrup.
LOL...I've corrupted a snack food!!!
Thank you!!!
I can hear you now...'Bad Blueberry, bad!' Haha!!
Out of all the berries you listed, blues are my favorites!!
Never thought to combine with zucchini...mmmm!
Must. Find. And. Destroy. Those. Berries. With. Sugar. Now!
HAHAHA! That's awesome.
And yes...blueberry zucchini bread is to die for.
You are on my team.
Thanks for reading!!
Corrupt on girl, that sounds and looks delish! I love blueberries SO much. And I love all your descriptions of the other berries - perfect!!
I never knew that time spent with blueberries could sound so sensual!
I grew up in Maine, where blueberries are one of the top crops. I never appreciated them when I lived there, but now, as I watch the joy that they bring both of my children, I realize that I took them for granted.
Lovely post...beautiful imagery. I loved this line, "They tumble out of my hand into a bowl. I crush them, opening them, exposing them."
Gorgeous!
I rarely buy blueberries because of their price, but I LOVE to give them to my family with all of their nutritional value.
I want some of that last concoction! YUM!
Oh. My.
I hope hope hope my blueberries do well this year. I want to corrupt them. Badly.
oh how you have made all berries sort of sexy with this post! But those blueberries! So much to do with them...they are the flirtiest of the berry, apparently!
"They tumble out of my hand into the bowl. I crush them, opening them, exposing them."
Such a lovely image.
OMG.... I am an idiot! I didn't even realize that there are links.
Oh, I love this perspective of the "corrupted" blueberry. It was poetic and witty and entertaining. It's making me long desperately for summer!
If corrupted blueberries are wrong, I don't want to be right! Before now I have never thought of blueberries as sensual, I was wrong. Also my mouth is watering for blueberry anything now.
Any chance you could, you know, bring one of those to BBC?
I think I might need to take a cold shower now.
Food porn, indeed. Like those centerfolds in the Williams-Sonoma cookbooks.
You are so, so GOOD, Mandy. I admire you so much.
You're making me blush! I had so much fun writing this one. I was totally giggling the whole time while my husband rolled his eyes.
Barbarian.
Corrupted blueberries are the ultimate. And oh my! They're so, so good.
I'm so spoiled. Living where I do, the blueberries are ripe. Right now. By summer, they'll be a distant memory.
Thank you so much!! I love all berries but didn't start appreciating the blueberry until I understood how bad I can make them.
If nothing else? The zucchini blueberry bread. Di. Vine.
The last concoction is actually a jam and...I've made it with frozen berries from Trader Joe's when I'm in a pinch.
Just as delicious.
Just as sinful.
My kids cannot get enough of them. They eat them like candy and added to anything and everything. SO delish.
Thank you so much! Berries are one of my favorite fruits - in all their forms. And the blueberries...too much fun.
That is seriously a sinful jam, my jar's almost gone!!! Ack!!!!
