Oh How Times Have Changed!

I have, sitting above my desk, a copy of an expert from Transportation Magazine dated July 1943. In it, a very...um...condescending man (I assume) gave employers tips on getting more efficiency out of women.

I love this clipping.

I hover between laughing out loud, horror and wanting to include it in my employee MOU. Because seriously, I think I really do need an "adequate number of rest periods" so I can "apply fresh lipstick" while tidying my hair and washing my hands.

Wait. I already do that.

Except the lipstick part. I rarely wear lipstick anymore. It's pointless when you have millions of kisses to give to your babies. Back on track...

Some of the tips are outrageous:

"General experience indicates 'husky' girls - those who are just a little on the heavy side - are more even tempered and efficient than their underweight sisters."

Some of them are ridiculous:

"When you have to use older women, try to get ones who have worked outside the home at some point in their lives. Older women who have never contacted the public have a hard time adapting themselves and are inclined to be cantankerous and fussy."

Although...now that I think about it...hmmm...I'll have to ask my mom's co-workers about this one.

And some of the tips are just silly:

"Pick young, married women. They usually have more of a sense of responsibility than their married sisters."

But all of the tips prove what a different world we live in.  And if you need more proof, have you seen that article floating around about how to be a good 1950's housewife?

Yeah.

This has me CRACKING up. Reminds me of the "Mrs. Cleaver" lady who readies herself for her husband and runs to the door when he gets home. HEH HEH HEH! Yes, times have changed. :)
