Itchy Fingers

For those of you who are new to Mandyland, you are in for a treat!

It's January.

Yes. I know. Obvious. But do you know what that means?

It's one of the most wonderful times of the year! Every January, I devour catalogs and gardening blogs. I read through my gardening books and then...

My pulse quickens. My head fills with visions of green leaves and organic, home grown produce. I picture my children scampering through the garden and eating vegetables. Actual vegetables. I envision myself walking through our garden in a flowy white skirt, a gardening hat on my head and a basket full of vegetables on my arm. I hear the birds singing, the bees buzzing (in my gorgeous new mason bee house) and smell the sweet scent of flowers in bloom.

Of course, reality is usually a different story all together.

Who can forget Death Boxes 2010?

And considering my teeny tiny yard is only eight feet wide in most places, there's not a whole lot of room for strolling and scampering. Remember, even though this is what I'm working with...

This is what I envision...
Please note the orchard.

(A girl can always dream, can't she?)

Because of my propensity for selecting plants based on their names and my inability to believe scale plans, I've decided I need a new motto this year.  To keep me focused. To ensure greater success.

K.I.S.S.

Keep It Simple Silly

Now, orignally the last "s" in this acronym stands for "stupid" but that's a bad word in our house. Silly is much more acceptable.

To this effect, we have expanded - yes, expanded - our gardening area by 17 feet, taking out a good chuck of lawn. I polled the kids and they were totally fine losing a bit of lawn. Especially after I bribed them with a green bean teepee.

I've drawn out my plan on grid paper. I've decided to use Square Foot Gardening as my Bible rather than a rough guide and I'm bound and determined to figure out an irrigation system before planting.

I'm planning and scheming. I'm learning from past mistakes and preparing to make new ones. I'm drawing and researching and learning. Most of all...

I'm dreaming.

Is it any wonder I love January?
