When Chad and I were still kid-free, going to a movie required little more than a Google search for show times and a quick discussion as to whether or not we wanted to grab dinner.
When we had Joseph, there was a little more planning involved. We had to find a babysitter and then a show time that jived with both the sitter's schedule as well as Joseph's. We had to plan at least a day or two in advance and keep out fingers crossed that it would all work out.
Now, however, with two children, going to a movie with Chad has taken on the appearance of Mission Impossible. Thankfully, last Friday Kendra and her husband Jergen were more than happy and willing to come watch the Dynamic Duo. (And really, a mother of two with a degree in education combined with a former police officer makes the best pair to match wits and energy with my little loves.)
Chad and I were shoo'd out the door to go on our first date night since Elizabeth was born. And what did we see? A great documentary called Homegrown about a family in Pasadena who are at the forefront of the Urban Homesteading movement. I adore their blog and check it out on a daily basis. The amount of produce they grow on 1/5 of an acre is not only mind boggling, but inspiring.
Tara organized the showing and Erin pitched in with a location. We sat under the stars at an ourdoor theatre, stomachs full of insanely good desserts while we huddled under blankets. Afterwards, we chatted for a few minutes and then headed home, expecting some sign of chaos. Instead, we walked into a cozy scene - both kids in bed, Kendra reading a book, Jergen watching a movie. The house was clean and smelled of chocolate brownies and popcorn. When Kendra said they could handle it, she wasn't joking.

Ooh! I love the idea of a movie under the stars. That sounds like a FABULOUS first date back!
