As an early Christmas present to us, Chad and I bought a digital camcorder to record all those brilliantly precious moments. Now, in addition to oodles of pictures, we'll have hours of video. Can you tell we just want to freeze this time in our lives and hold on?
Tonight was Joseph's pre-school's Christmas party. It was great. Food lining two long tables, the kids wearing antlers and singing "Jingle Bells", the parents and children playing Musical Chairs, falling to the floor as we raced towards an empty chair, Elizabeth falling asleep on Joseph's teacher's shoulder, Joseph and his friends running around with balloons and candy canes. All precious, once-in-a-lifetime memories.
And we forgot the cameras.
My only hope is that the mental images that are so clear in my mind today will stay vivid in the years to come. My little boy, cheeks flushed, blue eyes dancing, red hair held back by felt reindeer antlers, holding hands and swinging his arm with his friend Timmy as he sang "Chickachicka Boom Boom". Last year, he hid behind us when the children started their performance. This year he raced to the front of the room.
Someone stop him from growing up. It's going too fast.
