B-Day

At 12:30 this morning, while I was on hold with the on-call pediatrician, Chad leaned over and gave me a kiss.

"Happy birthday."

Beyond tired, I replied, "It's going to be a sucky birthday."

"No," he corrected. "It's going to be a funky birthday."

We'd had plans to go out for dinner and then to a movie. A simple date night, but the first since having Elizabeth. Those plans started to go awry when Joseph started sniffling on Thursday night. By Saturday, he was sneezing, coughing and carrying a tissue as a constant companion. Even though we did everything we could think - short of leaving the house - Elizabeth came down with his cold last night.

Four hours of sleep. That's all I could get between her poor little cries, her constant need to nurse and her pitiful little sniffles. Knowing one of us needed to have their wits about them, Chad got a bit more sleep so he could go on duty when Joseph woke up. At 8:00 this morning, as Elizabeth was waking up yet one more time, Chad came into the room - a bouquet of roses, a movie magazine (for all those movies we'll get to see on DVD), double-stuffed golden Oreos (bless him) and a sweet card. While I nursed Elizabeth, he made me breakfast - complete with the strongest tea I could handle - and insisted, when I finished, that I take a morning nap. I quickly complied and, when I woke up again around 11:30, was kicked out of the door to go get a mani/pedi - courtesy my children.

I came back to a quiet house. All my loves were napping and I was able to sit down to lunch. After everyone woke up, Chad picked up Thai food and, even though our dinner was punctuated by Joseph singing and Elizabeth demanding attention, it was delicious.

To top it all off...HBO has obligingly consented to show their season finales tonight so I'll get to spend the rest of the evening drooling over Eric in True Blood and laughing with the boys of Entourage.

Chad was right...it wasn't a sucky birthday. It was oh-so-funky. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some Oreos calling my name.
