Food and more food...

To continue last weekend so I can be all caught up before this weekend...

We woke up bright and early to head to the Sunken Gardens in Atascadero for the Easter Egg Hunt. We were lured by the promise of over 10,000 eggs and the assurance that Joseph would be in a smaller age group.

Back story: Last year we did an egg hunt at the local zoo that divided the kids up as under 6 and 7 and over. Nothing like a little two-year-old getting knocked over by a rambunctious six-year-old to make a Mommy leery about public egg hunts.

As promised there were plenty of eggs. Joseph and Chad waited patiently for the air horn signaling the beginning of the hunt. As soon as it blew, we were off! We walked through the maze - Joseph more adept at finding his way than we were - and found collections of eggs. Within fifteen minutes, it was over. Joseph's basket was full. Chad and I couldn't find out way out of the maze. All in all, a successful egg hunt.

We followed the egg hunt with a trip to Templeton's Farmers Market. I needed strawberries and a few things for Easter brunch. Joseph and Chad needed to run around like crazy people on the playground. We were all able to accomplish our goals with the added bonus of an amazing lunch from Gadovini's. (God, I hope I'm spelling that correctly.)

Saturday afternoon, Melissa and Ryan decided to hang out with us domestics. I wasn't sure what to make for dinner, but then Ryan graciously volunteered to make dinner. I'm no fool. I agreed instantly and spent the evening without having to worry about cooking.

He butterflied and BBQ'd two whole chickens. (Way too much poultry for us, but it sure was tasty on sandwiches the next day.) As an appetizer, Melissa prepared and Ryan BBQ'd a homemade pizza. I had to take a picture. I love the color combination of mozzarella cheese, tomatoes and basil. It tasted even better than it looked.

Joseph loved it. We liked the taste of the BBQ'd pizza - and the fact that we didn't need to heat up the house with the oven - so much, we actually repeated it later in the week for dinner.

Easter morning dawned sunny and warm. I got up and got started on my quiches. I'm going to post the recipes separately under another post because, I have to tell you, they turned out brilliantly. That's why I need to write it down before I forget! I really want to be able to repeat the experience.

Melissa woke up shortly after us and, while she and Joseph enjoyed a cup of coffee and "coffee", we were able to chat a bit more.

Speaking of coffee...we had a bit of an incident. Joseph finished his coffee earlier than Melissa and wanted down from his stool. (Before you report me to CPS, his coffee consisted of milk and a drop of coffee.) He asked for more and Melissa told him that they could make their second cups after she was finished with her first. Next thing we know, there's the sound of shattering glass. I spun around to see Joseph on his kitchen stool next to a counter top covered with hot coffee. I grabbed him and stripped his wet shirt off, then rushed him into the bathroom to run his little arm under cool water. Fortunately, he didn't get burned too badly.

Chad and Melissa cleaned up the mess while I explained to Joseph that when Mommy or another grown-up says wait, he needs to listen. I doubt he'll take my reasoning into serious consideration. He is, after all, in the "I can do it" stage.

After the coffee fiasco, the morning went quickly. Chad's family arrived, Melissa and Ryan departed. We ate, then ate some more. We went outside for a bit so I could show off my garden and then, everyone left. By 2:00, Joseph laid down for a nap. Chad and I dozed off shortly thereafter.

We finished off the evening with a walk around the lake and time at the playground. I think I'm going to go for brunch from now on. So much easier than dinner.

Sadly, I didn't get any pictures of Easter. I got one of the quiche, but I'm going to post that with the recipe. I just got too busy in the kitchen to get behind the lens. I think Chad's going to get recruited as a photography assistant next year. (I would recruit him a sous chef but I value my marriage.)
