State of the Garden

We had a busy afternoon in the garden. The weather, after a week of cool temperatures and rain, granted us sunshine and a rise in the mercury. It's been a while since I last posted about what's happening in my beds. (My veggie beds, people. Geesh. Get your minds out of the gutter.) Onward...

My peas are doing beautifully. I'll be putting up the trellis this week so they'll have something to cling to. They're just adorable - little curling leaves and vines. I can't wait until they take over their portion of the fence line. They'll look nice and jumbly.

The blackberry and raspberry bushes are growing. Leaves have sprouted on what a few weeks ago resembled sticks in the ground. The grape vines are still dormant. I think. Either that or dead. In other words...they're not doing a thing.

My carrots have popped up. I think Joseph and I went a little crazy with the seeds because the rows resemble strips of grass - lush and green and difficult to ascertain what I should pull. I think I'll make my mom help me out next weekend with the whole thinning process.

My onions and garlic are getting huge. In hindsight, I planted them too far apart. Next time I can probably get double the number. As if I need more.

My lettuce is...doing nothing. The little sprouts haven't gotten any bigger over the last couple of weeks. And they have little nibble marks. I think whatever ate my spinach is starting on my lettuce. I'm borrowing a couple of pots from Ken and Sue to put new spinach in. Maybe if it's higher, it won't be as vulnerable.

We spent today planting green beans, herbs (basil, thyme and cilantro), radishes, cucumbers and cauliflower. I'm a bit worried about the radishes. As I was planting them in a little row, Joseph was taking the seeds out of the packet and planting them somewhere in the yard. I have a sneaky suspicion we're going to have radishes everywhere.

The cauliflower should be interesting. It's in two portions of the garden. I can't wait to see what happens.

Both the cauliflower and radishes were last minute decisions. Somehow I have too much space! I've marked out where I want my eight tomato plants, five bell peppers, two jalapenos and three zucchini and I still have ten plus feet of space. After the peas are done, I'll get rid of the vines and plant watermelon. Other than that...I'm not sure what else to add. Any suggestions?
