I asked an old school friend up in Washington to send us a bit of rain. As much as I'm enjoying our unseasonable warm weather, I also know that we need the rain. Desperately. He said he'd do a rain dance.
It worked!
I just checked the ten day forecast and it looks like we'll be getting rain on Saturday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. This works out perfectly because we were planning on a bit of gardening on Sunday.
We had every intention of planting our bare roots this weekend but both local gardening supply stores were out of the retaining border we have in other parts of our yard.
Side note: We have awful soil in our yard. It's pure clay. When we expanded our sprinkler system we had to scrape the clay off our shovels after every scoop. In the summer, it dries to a cracked, hard surface. Everything we plant needs to be raised at least a foot. Hence, the borders.
We bought everything else we need and got a rain check for the borders. Supposedly they will be in stock this week. *fingers crossed* I'm getting perilously close to the end of bare root season.

Rather than add new soil above the clay, you can also dig organic matter (compost) into the clay to improve both the nutrient value and the texture (sand/clay). It does take several years to get it really nice and hummousy, but I just thought I'd mention that it is an option.
