Hip to be Square

Since we talked about chickens yesterday, I feel like now's a good time to talk about gardening.

For those of you who are not into such pursuits, keep reading...you'll love it. I promise.

Fine. Here. Why don't you go read Baby Lucha?

Now. For those of you who are left, let's roll up our sleeves for a little garden talk.

As I mentioned before, we've recently added a bit of space to our garden, increasing the growing area to a lovely 205 sq. ft. According to Mel of Square Foot Gardening that amount of space, if used properly, will yield enough produce for well, more than our family. But considering I want to can and dehydrate, I'm cool with that.

Stop it. Really, I'm only planting more than we'll eat so that I can preserve the rest. It has nothing to do with my seed buying addiction. Give me some credit, people

Now, I've already described how tiny our yard is. Remember my super cool drawing? But, with the five 4x4 square foot beds, I think we're going to go places this year.

While keeping it simple. Yes, yes. I remember my motto. Geesh. You guys are serious spoil sports.

So...here's what we have so far:
Side note: Admit it. You're seriously impressed with my ability to Paint. And with my sunflowers. Especially the sunflowers.

Now...moving onward. You can see that my little squares create a tiny meandering path through the garden. I thought that was a nice touch. Chad wanted to do a straight row, but I convinced him to plan for some whimsy.

Wait. Can you plan for whimsy? Or is that just in our house?

So now we have our gorgeous raised beds filled with dirt, vermiculite and compost, just waiting for seeds. At least, we would if Maggie dog didn't think that each and every bed is her own personal play box.

Oh yes.

Compost + Manure = Doggie Heaven

So we have to put up a small fence.

Or a brick wall.

Whichever will keep her out.

There you have it, kids. The current status of our garden. Stay tuned for ollas, chickens, trellises and...if you're really lucky...pictures of how it all actually looks.

Head on over to Makes Fun of Stuff where I'm intoducing our readers to Boris, our new ad man. Oh. And reviewing a sticker maker.
