CRS - Plaskett Creek

Since camping season is upon us, I thought I'd rate some of the past campgrounds that we've visited. (Good thing I keep detailed blog entries!) This time around, one of my favorites: Plaskett Creek.

Accessibility: 4
Plaskett Creek is an hour and half drive from our house. Most of the drive takes place along beautiful Hwy 1. While scenic, the hairpin turns and steep cliffs make for a bit of a hairy drive for those of us who get motion sick.

Campground: 4
The campground itself is gorgeous. Towering evergreens provide shad for most sites. The center section has a large, flat grassy expanse - perfect for running toddlers and preschoolers or a game of croquet. The sites are large and at a distance from the other sites. The only reason the campground is marked to a "4" instead of a "5" is because of the drum circles. While I actually enjoy the drumming beats that echo across the clearing as the sun sets, some may think it interferes with the serenity.

Amenities: 3
No showers but there are flush toilets. The water isn't potable, so you should bring your own. The campground host is always friendly and you can buy fire wood for a reasonable price. It's fairly rustic, but at the same time, the roads are paved and you're only about twenty minutes from Gorda where you can pick up - for a high price - anything you may have forgotten.

Activities: 4
There are several trail heads within a short drive of Plaskett Creek. While we haven't tried any of them yet, we're looking forward to doing so once the kids are a bit older.

Across the road (Hwy 1) is a trail leading down to an amazing beach. You can either walk along Hwy 1 - not very busy at that point - or drive the half a mile to the parking lot. We usually spend most of our day there, checking out tide pools, walking along the shore, playing rock toss. We've even taken naps stretched out under the sun, the sound of the ocean lulling us to sleep.

Child Friendliness: 4
This is a small campground with plenty of room to run. There are trees to climb, beaches to explore and no sound of traffic or trains or any other sounds of civilization. We took Joseph there when he was five months old and loved it as much then as when we last went when he was two.

The only non-child friendly bit is the poison oak that lines the trail to the beach. We usually carry Joseph down the steep trail, but when he's older that poison oak could pose a problem.

Overall rating: 3.8
