On Friday night I painted glass ornaments while watching Zodiac. They turned out fairly well. The green was a bit tricky. It was hard keeping them from looking too...camo. I love the way the blue turned out. They remind me of miniature worlds with swirls of silver clouds. I don't have any pictures right now, but I'll take some this weekend to share.
Saturday was pretty busy. Kendra and I made plans to make strawberry jam, applesauce and pumpkin butter. (We were obviously feeling ambitious.) The boys and I headed over to Farmers first thing in the morning to pick up what proved to be the last strawberries of the season. Kendra stopped at Avila Barn on her way to my house to pick up apples.
Side note: I went to Wal-Mart Friday night to grab a few pint jars. I was dismayed to discover that canning supplies are considered "seasonal" and they are no longer in stock. I understand that we're a bit past the typical harvest season, but good Lord...apples are ripening around the country! What about those?
Shortly after her arrival, Kendra and I had the apples simmering on the back burner while we crushed and prepped the strawberries. A little over five hours later, we were able to look proudly at 11 pints of applesauce, 8 pints of strawberry jam and 2 pints of pumpkin butter.
Side note: I did a bit of research looking for a pumpkin butter recipe only to discover that canning is not a recommended preserving method. We put the butter in jars and stuck them in the fridge instead.
The pumpkin butter is quickly becoming a family favorite. We spread it on toast and plan on putting it on pancakes. The sweet, spicy scent permeates the house reminding me of pies and Thanksgiving - a reminder I need as the temperatures stubbornly cling to the upper portion of the thermometer.
