I have this theory called "The Dishes Dilemma". It's based on years of living with other people and can actually be applied to any number of household chores.
At some point in every relationship - whether it be husband, boyfriend, roommate or sibling - someone says, "I always do the dishes." And they honestly believe it. My theory is that this is attributed to the fact that when you're not doing the dishes, they're not being done. What I mean is you don't notice them being done. The only time you are cognizant of dish duty is when you're actually elbow deep in suds and thinking to yourself, "Didn't I just do this?" Even if you have a scheduled, written down account of dish detail, you're going to think, "I know that (insert name) didn't do the dishes like he was supposed to."
I explained this theory last night when Chad and I were folding clothes. He complained, "I always fold the clothes." (This in spite of the fact that we were both in the process of clothes folding.) I detailed "The Dishes Dilemma". After several minutes, he replied, "You know...that makes sense, but really, you never fold the clothes." The fact that he was able to say this while I was in the midst of folding towels made me laugh.
